A few days ago, I went to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. It’s about a 10-minute walk from Shinjuku Station, and there are three entrances.
Despite being in the city center, the grounds are vast, and many people were lying on the lawn or walking around. There are also restaurants and other facilities on the premises, but there was a long line at Starbucks Coffee in particular.
There was a section with numerous roses on display, and many people were aiming their cameras at the roses of various colors. There were probably around 100 different types of roses.
There is also a large greenhouse on the premises, where a wide variety of plants, mainly those from tropical regions, are exhibited.
Banana flower. (Musa acuminata)
Jade Vine. (Strogylodon macrobotrys) A climbing evergreen woody plant native to the Philippines that produces beautiful flowers.
There were flowers blooming on the Japanese big-leaf magnolia (Magnolia obovata Thunb.) on the premises. The leaves are over 30cm long, and the flowers are about 20cm in diameter. The petals are fleshy and look somewhat delicious…
There were very interesting trees in the northern area. It’s called Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), a deciduous conifer that turns red in autumn and loses its leaves. Those trees have aerial roots growing from the ground like bamboo shoots, and they play a role in absorbing oxygen. Since this species grows in wetlands and swamps, it needs to have these roots to prevent oxygen deficiency in the water.
I was able to observe various plants by walking around a lot this time as well. How about taking a rest in the natural environment of the city to heal your tiredness from the hustle and bustle of the city? See you.
