Recorded the lightning
This summer is unusually long… It feels like the number of days with temperatures exceeding 30°C is increasing year by year.
Lightning often occurs when it is hot during the day. I think there are a certain number of people who are afraid of lightning, but I actually like watching lightning. It’s not that I’m not scared at all, but I’m often fascinated by the ever-changing light show in the night sky, and I end up watching it for hours.
I tried cutting a short clip from a video of lightning I was able to capture a little while ago, so I’ll post it here.
The most impressive one was this ↓
The Mechanism of Lightning
There is an easy-to-understand diagram on the website of Otowa Electric Co., Ltd.
The air is warmed by the sun’s rays, creating an updraft containing water vapor. -
Water vapor turns into water droplets and then further into ice particles due to the cold air at higher altitudes. -
When the ice particles grow larger, they begin to fall due to gravity, and they become charged through friction with each other (the upper part of the thundercloud and the ground become positively charged, while the lower part becomes negatively charged).
When the potential difference between the negative and positive charges becomes significant, it generates an electrical current in the air (resulting in “lightning strikes” to the ground and “cloud discharges” occurring within or between thunderclouds).
What I captured this time were cloud discharge. While there were lightning strikes that I couldn’t capture, most of them were cloud discharges. In my experience, when thunder starts, there usually aren’t many lightning strikes, so it’s important to stay calm and seek in a safe place. Being inside a car or a building is generally safe.
When I was a child, I once witnessed lightning striking right in front of me while I was on the balcony. I remember that the area in front of me turned completely white, and then shortly after, there was probably an afterimage burned into my retina, and I saw a red streak where the lightning had passed. And a tremendous thunderclap! (The sound of the air rapidly heating and expanding due to the electrical current.) The sound pressure made the glass door shake so much that I thought it might shatter. I was so surprised that I couldn’t say a word and was frozen with my mouth open.
Since then, I have been keeping the windows closed as much as possible while observing.
Fireworks are great, but lightning is nature’s own fireworks. I enjoy it as a natural spectacle.
